At the abandoned opera house, costume designer and undercover agent Rei waited beneath a single work lamp. The high neckline and cutout lines of her black stage costume caught the light in sharp fragments. Tonight, the theatre would open for an audience of just one: its former lighting director.
He arrived carrying the original lighting plans, believed lost in the fire. Rei spread them across the stage. Together they followed the old cable routes and found a cabinet untouched beneath the stairs. Inside were recordings of the company’s final rehearsal.
They played the first recording as daylight entered through the roof. The empty room filled with voices. Rei raised the curtain by hand, revealing rows of dusty red seats. Before the building could become a theatre again, it had needed someone to remember what it sounded like.
