The last customer left the club at two. June pulled on her long black gloves and stepped into the alley. Against the old brick wall, the red of her costume glowed like the final note of a song.

She was supposed to be going home. Instead, she followed the sound of someone practising a trumpet on a rooftop. A young musician stood beside a broken speaker, playing to an audience of satellite dishes.

“They cancelled the show,” he said. June looked across the sleeping neighbourhood and opened the club’s back door. Ten minutes later, music drifted into the street. Windows lit up, one by one. Someone brought coffee. Someone else began to dance.

By sunrise the alley was empty again, but the city felt different. June locked the door and walked home. Not every heroine needed a mission briefing. Sometimes all it took was knowing when to keep the lights on.
