How long does PU leather last?

Ageing starts before the first wear

PU can deteriorate even when unused. Moisture-related hydrolysis is one ageing mechanism; heat, light, contamination and mechanical wear can also affect the finish. A purchase date is not necessarily the fabric’s production date.

Japan’s national cleaning association discusses ordinary PU synthetic leather deteriorating in around two to three years. That is general garment-care guidance, not a tested lifespan, expiry date or warranty for IRIS costumes. Different formulations and conditions can produce different results.

Inspect the condition, not only the calendar

1. LookCheck folds, underarms, cuffs and fastenings for cracks, bubbles, peeling or flakes. Compare with earlier photographs if a change is subtle.
2. Touch gentlyUnexpected tackiness or a surface sticking to its storage cover is a reason to pause. Do not force two stuck layers apart.
3. DecideIf the surface remains sound, handle it gently and keep monitoring. If it is sticky or shedding, separate it from the body and other garments; contact the maker before cleaning or repair.

Care helps; it does not stop time

A cool, shaded, ventilated storage space and prompt gentle care reduce avoidable stress. No oil, spray or wrapping method can be promised to make PU last forever. Preserve favourite looks with photographs and rotate display outfits rather than leaving one under tension indefinitely.
